When you get sentenced for a felony the judge forgets to tell you one of the most important pieces of information.
Namely that, if you think you’ll ever get a decent job, you can forget it, no matter who you are or what you did prior to your crime.
As a felon, you are not allowed to hold any business licenses other than a truck driver’s license or a barber’s license, at least that’s the law in my state of NY. Most people think, “once I fulfilled my sentence I would be able to get back on with my life”…unfortunately for many, that is completely wrong and unrealistic. The truth is hard but it is the truth, I know, I’ve been through it. The rejection, depression, feeling like you have little to look forward to.
If you search the internet you soon find that really the only job opportunities a felon has are:
Manual Labor
Truck Driver
Gypsie Cab Drive
Unarmed Security Guard
…and thats about it, MacDonalds won’t even hire felons.
Unless your family or a close friend owns a business that you can work at. I know, its very unfair, its almost like extending part of your sentence for LIFE.
I tried applying for jobs and as soon as the background search came back I was either fired or not offered the job. I had to find an alternative to the “Regular Job Market”, I had to find other opportunities….and I did.
