Jobs For Felons in New Jersey, Few and Far Between

Posted on | May 24, 2010 | No Comments

Below are some excerpts from an article about jobs for felons, that I found on NorthJersey.com. Apparently thing are not getting any better for felons and ex-cons in New Jersey (NJ).

You can read it if you want, but itsmore of the same old stuff, all complaining, no answers! Jobs for felons are very scarce, yes, but if a felon can just get some help from a family member, if they have any, to hold them over for a few months, felons can make money online, I know for a fact they can.

Anyway, here are some quotes from the article and a link to the whole thing.

———————————————————————————————————-

“Released from prison in February after serving time for possession with intent to distribute narcotics, Burgess said hes trying to get back on his feet and find steady work.

He is participating in drug court, taking hotel hospitality courses and applying for jobs daily, but with the exception of some sporadic construction work, he has largely come up empty.”

“Ex-offenders trying to make the transition into society face a plethora of challenges, including restricted access to public housing, suspended driving privileges and a lack of education or prior job experience. But the biggest barriers are limited employment opportunities.”

Well, I am sure you get the gist of it, jobs for felons in NJ are hard to comeby.

If you want to read the rest, here it is .

Jobs For Felons: Colorado Passes Law, Could Make More Jobs For Felons Avaialbe

Posted on | May 20, 2010 | No Comments

The Governor of Colorado, made it illegal to affect job discrimination against felons. Jobs for felons should be easier to get now, at least in Colorado. The law, House Bill 1023, which he signed on March 29, 2010 specifically….

prohibits an employee’s criminal history from being part of a lawsuit against a business unless that criminal history has direct applicability to the legal action

So what does that mean? Well if you got convicted of a drug crime, an auto insurance company should have no problem hiring you now, their insurance rates against being sued because you’re a felon are going to go down, way down, for that specific coverage. Thats why a lot of big companies don’t hire felons, the increase in liability and the increased cost of insuring against it.

Now if you got busted for drugs, you’re not going to be working for a drug manufacturer. The same with someone who committed bank fraud, they can’t work for a bank, but maybe they can get a job at that drug manufacturer.
This really could open up the market for jobs for felons in Colorado. Hopefully other States see the wisdom in this law and start adopting similar legislation themselves. Get in touch with you local state senator, and make him aware of the Colorado statute, and give him you opinion on the matter.
